With the rise of social media over the past few years many great things have come of it. From uniting long lost relatives to helping over throw ruthless dictators, social media has accomplished a great deal. However, arguably the greatest aspect of the instant spread of information has been the hilarity that comes with it (arguably the greatest aspect). From the endless stream of memes to the seemingly infinite hours of YouTube hilarity , social media has graced our lives with mountains of laughter.

Let’s say you have the bright idea to incorporate social media into your business, you pitch the idea to your boss. He or she knows only one thing about social media: It is the new big thing. Your boss green lights your project and puts you in charge, finally! A chance to shine! You’re the hero, a parade is held and high fives are shared all around, what a great idea! A few weeks go by and you are no longer the hero, there are no measurable results to show for all your work. You show your boss the company Facebook page, the Twitter page but he doesn’t buy into it anymore, might as well have been hitting the phones your boss tells you. But it increased our reputation, brand awareness, customers relate and have a better connection with us you say. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can actually measure. Here are a couple of ways to concretely measure your social media efforts.

Has your boss looked at your Facebook? Probably, it is becoming a common practice. There have been instances where social media sites such of who they are hiring, and that is not a bad idea on their part. Let’s face it, they are investing a lot of money (even though you may want more) in you and want to know as much about you as they can. as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have had a negative effect on people and their careers. From Anthony Weiner to twenty four year old Ashley Payne losing her job as an English teacher, social media affects everyone. However, it does not have to be this way! The fact is your employer or potential employer might look at your social media pages to get a better idea of who they are hiring, and that is not a bad idea on their part. Let’s face it, they are investing a lot of money (even though you may want more) in you and want to know as much about you as they can.

I need to admit it, despite a specialization in technology, I do not buy into this “new is ALWAYS better” mentality. You can see this modern day ideal everywhere, be it people pitching tents and breaking out the Coleman stoves in front of Apple stores, to the latest diet that is being plastered on MSNBC. All of this is well and good, and if it was not for the push toward “NEW”, BroadReach would never have started, but this idea has some pitfalls.

Now that the most wonderful time of the year is over and we’re getting ready to make empty promises to ourselves—I’m going to work out every day instead of eating a block of cheese while watching myself in the mirror and telling myself my father was a fool for thinking I’d get nowhere (no I won’t)—We can finally stop arguing over which tablet is the best and just let holiday sales and strangers on the internet do it for us. Without further ado (no one knows what that means) I present:
